United Update

Things are really starting to shape up for one of the best Uniteds ever!  For you Tiger owners there will be several TAC senior inspectors attending our United and they will inspect your car for a fee. More information will be available soon as well as scheduling.  I have met a Tiger owner who has a portable dyno and travels to various vintage races and car shows with his dyno rig.  For about $45 he will dyno any car you want to test and give you a printout of horsepower and torque at the wheels all the way to redline as well as your air/fuel mixture at any RPM.  This could be a LOT of fun seeing who puts the most power to the ground-or just to see how well your engine is running. We will have to come up with an award for the winner of the horsepower shoot-out and this includes Alpines too! Please-if you are interested in doing this, send me an email at sunbeams@sc.rr.com as soon as possible so that I can see if we will have enough cars in order for him to bring his dyno to us.

Bonnie and I spent last weekend at the Hilton with the East Coast Mini club.  You are going to really enjoy staying at the Hilton-it is a wonderful place!  We have 100 rooms blocked for the United and so far over 30 rooms have been reserved.  Please make your reservations early so that you don’t miss out.  The Hilton’s phone number is 1-888-856-0028.  Call between 8-5 PM (Mon-Fri.) and ask for in-house reservations.  Tell them you are with the Sunbeam car club and/or Tigers East/Alpines East to get our discount rate.  The discounted room rate is good for 3 days before and after the United if you want to stay a little longer.  Thanks for sending your United registration forms in early-a drawing will be held at the United from all early registrations (before October 1st) and a special prize given to the lucky winner as an incentive to register early!

For history buffs, you may have heard that the Civil War era submarine USS Hunley is slowly being restored here in Charleston.  Tickets are available on-line at www.thehunley.com if you are interested in seeing it in person.  These tours are very popular and sell out quickly. Make sure you take a look at our club website  www.teae.org occasionally to see United updates and additional tourist links-there will be plenty to see and do here in October for the whole family!  Thanks, Eric (sunbeams@sc.rr.com)  and Joe (

At the end of the bridge take  first exit on the right towards Mt. Pleasant/Patriot’s Point. Turn right at first traffic light and go past the USS Yorktown. Go one more block and Hilton entrance is on the right. Drive safely and we will see you there!

See the schedule of events!

We are going to try something a little different at this United- we will have a United at a resort on the ocean!  Ten years ago at the last Charleston United that was about the only complaint that people had, that the ocean was almost 10 miles from the hotel.  Well not this year.  The view from your hotel room will be a wonderful addition to spending time with our favorite cars and the people that come with them.  All of this comes at a price though! October is peak tourist season in Charleston as the hot summer is over and outside activities become enjoyable again.  Hotel rooms are hard to come by and they are at the highest rates.  We are breaking new ground here with our room rates of $129 per night-that is discounted from the normal rates of $189 per night.  But you will feel that every penny is well spent when you drive  your Sunbeam onto the resort and see the view!!  We will have photos of the hotel and it’s location posted soon on the club website as well as a schedule of events so that you can plan your United weekend.  The Hilton has offered their discount room rates to us for an additional 3 days both before and after the United dates so you can stay in Charleston a little while longer.  Reservations can be made by calling toll-free:  888-856-0028 and asking for Jacquetta Grant.  Mention that you are with the Sunbeam car club!

“As you know, we are located on Patriots Point, just across the harbor from downtown Charleston, the Hilton Charleston Harbor Resort & Marina combines easy access to Downtown Charleston via scheduled water taxi with the convenience of ample complimentary parking. The view across the harbor of the Charleston skyline at sunset provides that magical ambiance to set the mood for a real break from the ordinary. The Hotel combines the advantages of a beachfront setting complete with Marina and pier and adjacent Patriots Point Golf Course with the pleasures and historic aspects of Downtown Charleston just minutes away. In addition to the convenient water taxi the Hotel provides a scheduled shuttle service into Downtown Charleston or private transportation can be arranged for your group.”
