I am in the process of making my Series IV drivable and would like to know what the proper valve clearances should be set when cold. The only specifications that I have found are for a hot engine. There must be, I hope, specifications when rebuilding the engine prior to running it.

No, you need to do your valve adjustment when the engine is HOT, because of the thermal properties of the aluminum head (expansion/contraction). Thus why you don’t find specs for COLD settings. (If you had a cast iron head, this wouldn’t apply.)

Exactly what did you do with your motor – complete rebuild? I would hook everything up, start it, run it for 3-5 minutes (to operating temp), then readjust your valves AND retorque the head. Always an anxious moment; helps to have a buddy near by for moral support…and a Guinness to quell the nerves!

The initial cold setting is .002 larger than the hot setting. After running for 20 minutes or so then re-adjust to the hot setting. Before you re-adjust measure the clearance and you’ll see that most of the extra clearance has disappeared.
