Local British car newsletters are warning their membership about the recent reduction of zinc dialykl dithiophosphate (ZDDP) in API approved oils. This is causing early failure in new camshafts; moly-disulfide assembly lube is not enough. Older, broken-in units do not have a problem from what I read.

The problem is defined for "flat tappet camshafts". Does anyone know if this applies to standard 260 lifters which have "convex spherical shape" contacting the cam?

      Cheers, Gilles

      Yes, it does.

There are oils that have maintained the old additive content (I think Shell Rotella T is in this camp) or else you might be able to get it as an oil treatment additive.
