My original brake booster just failed and I’d like to rebuild it- is anyone providing a kit for them at this time? My car is a ’66 MK1a, would like to avoid switching to a superseded booster if possible. If no kit available, what’s the best solution that looks the most original these days? Thanks in advance.

Call Rick at Sunbeam Specialties, he has a lot of stuff not listed. One thing to note first though is what booster do you currently have. Should be the 7 inch but since those things could have been switched around you should check since the seals in the kits are not interchangeable between yhe 5 and 7 inch boosters since the assist ratio changed.

Rick sent me the rebuild kit last week, I think it was about $90 plus shipping. Yesterday I got to it, and it was actually kind of a fun project. Once disassembled, it was obvious that mine had never been rebuilt, with a torn leather diaphragm on the big end, and all the little rubber seals were considerably smaller in diameter than the new parts- no wonder it leaked. Directions were very clear. The only thing I could NOT change was a single rubber washer inside the valve body- I just couldn’t get a good grip on the snap ring that held it in there, and the more I fooled with it the more I got concerned I would scratch the bore, which would be worse. So we will see if that becomes a problem. All the other parts of the kit went in easily, and reinstalled it in the car, carefully hooking the brake and air lines. Topped the master cylinder reservoir up, fired up the car. I know I will need to bleed everything to be officially done, but all seems good! Pedal gives it back to me, no leaks, and no more smoke screen of burning brake fluid when you pump the brakes. I will bleed everything today I hope, then a proper road test around the neighborhood…

Just to close this out, after bleeding the brakes and topping everything off, the brakes are fantastic. Can’t wait to see what happens next…there are some odd vibrations from the rear end, I may look at the U-Joints next!

The best way to field test your braking system & booster: DO NOT start car, but pump up the brake and hold the pedal down firmly. Now start the car in neutral and the pedal should move away from you a bit. Continue to hold pedal down. If the pedal continues to creep down then it means you have a leak. Possibly from the power valve lip seal that you did not replace. We do a lot of these, randy
