I want to take my car on a tour on Monday and am thinking of converting to a GM internal regulator one wire alternator. Currently I am having some charging issues and I want to do an 8 hour each direction drive. I ‘m thinking I’d like to know that I can get a replacement alternator at any auto parts place.

I have the alternator and also a bracket to adapt it to my 1725 engine. Do we have a write up anywhere on what to do with the wiring. What happens at the current regulator and can we run the indicator light to the current dash light?

A number of guys have converted to one-wire alternators. GM is popular, as is a relatively common Hitachi alternator. Most conversions require slight modification to the bracket, frequently just a matter of elongating the mounting holes to shift the position of the pulley. Tom Hayden wrote up instructions for the Hitachi, which should give you a good start. You can find Tom’s write-up here: http://mhartman.net/files/sunbeam/Hitac … ev%202.pdf . You might also find it useful to read some of the discussions on the SAOCA site on this topic.

        Hi Jim,
Thanks for sending that write up. I think I can get this done tomorrow.
        Regards,

Good luck. If you aren’t trying to keep a totally stock look, switching to a one-wire really cleans up the engine compartment. Or, as some have done, you can leave the now-excess components in the engine bay but still have the benefit of a readily available, more powerful alternator. I’ve had a Hitachi one in my SV for about 15 years and been very happy with the conversion.
