I’m needing to change my bellhousing as the current one was modified sometime in the past, and there is only about 3/16" bite where the transmission bolts up. Anyone have any experience in installing a Lakewood bellhousing? What can I look forward to?
Also, any suggestions on a clutch?
TIA,

What do you mean by not enough bite? like not enough threads if so TIG it up on the back side and install heli coils, I also had a lakewood at one time looked like there would be some mods to make it work in a Tiger (width) Try a Ram 10.5" hd clutch also if you still have the long type cover you will need to drill a new bolt pattern for a diaphrgam cover the bolt pattern is still the same just in a differant position and its located by 3 dowell pins unlike a long cover which has shouldered bolts, or check with McCloud in ca for a long clutch they make good stuff.

I used a Lakewood on a 302 40 years ago. Memories include using a big hammer on the firewall, fabricating a slave cylinder bracket and dragging it on speed bumps because it becomes the lowest point on the car.
If you are not going to be racing, a Ford bell housing is a better idea. One man’s opinion. -

Thanks Joel and Bud! Trying to locate a replacement. I guess my dad’s original was a narrow pattern, which was then set into a wide pattern bellhousing.

Chip: It really dosn’t matter what bell housing as long as the brg. retainer locates the gearbox correctly,as I said the bolt pattern can be put on any bellhousing, good case in point we got some un known bell housing that we were assured was for a 5 speed, it was! right after I Tig’d it up and put the correct
bolt pattern on it. call this guy, Bill De Mattia 330 630-2718 I just sold a top loader to a guy in Wisc and he had a bellhousing the Tiger I am doing has a Camero 5 speed and a Ford bellhousing none of this is Impossable just a little more work.Joel

So….How lucky is it that of the two Toploader Specialist listed on Tigers United, one of them is about an hour away?
I called Dan Williams yesterday and spoke with him. Great guy! He told me to "just bring it on over and we’ll take a look at it." I got there at 4:30. I didn’t realize that "we’ll take a look at it" was just he and I. He spent the next three hours with me going through the transmission. It was hard for me to tell when he was being sarcastic with me, and when he was actually serious. Those of you who know me might find that hard to believe, given my sarcastic nature, but it is true.
I get to keep the bellhousing that I have. My transmission body will be changed from a C4 to a C5, and the yoke will be changed to match the bellhousing. On top of that, I’ll be getting the wide ratio gearing installed. In Dan’s words, "That’s the cat’s ass!"
I’m guessing somewhere along the way to (attempting) becoming a more politically correct society, "Cat’s Ass" got replaced with "Cat’s Meow." I like "Cat’s Ass" better.
Thanks Again Guys!
ChipP.S. Joel: the radiator shroud worked out really well. Thanks!
