Perhaps this has happened to you:

You’re at a local autocross, it’s the last run, you have to make up .5 of a second to win your class, and finally beat the son-of-a-Z car that’s been giving you trouble all season long. You are doing just great until you give a little too much power in a long sweeping turn and before you say, “Buddy, send your rice grinder back to Japan”, your rear end is now where your front end was and you’ve knocked over 20 pylons.

You ask yourself, “What can I do to correct this shameful act?” Well, you could sell your car, or just plain quit autocrossing, but if you’re anything like me you can’t buy either of those alternatives.

You could continue in this shameful manner and plug your ears when they taunt, “Sunbeams never were meant to have a V-8 in them!” or “Take that thing to the dragstrip where it belongs!”

But nooo… there must be something else to do. A good rear sway bar set-up is the answer. An Addco bar is as good as any.

Right out of the box, if you follow all the instructions, your rear sway bar will really improve the car’s handling. Unfortunately, it only works for a short period of time. The center rubber bushings will become stretched so badly that the bar will barely work at all. The bar’s end mounting will also work itself loose.

If you constantly want to crawl under the car and tighten up the sway bar bolts, it will continue to work okay. But if you really want to show that Z-car that your Tiger gets meaner with age, you will have to do a little work.

The center rubber bushings must be changed to DELRON. This particular bushing will have to be a two-piece bushing, in other words, it will be cut in half so it will fit over the bar. The best thing to do with the stock ADDCO end brackets is to take them in your hand … and drop them in the nearest garbage can. A new end bracket will have to be made. My end bracket is made out of 1/4″ steel plate. It has a pivot and is adjustable.

The sway bar should be put on with the end arms facing the rear and the bar should remain level when installed. The bracket should also be bolted through the frame or welded to it. (Bolts with sway bar kit will pull through frame).

You will be glad you went through the extra trouble if you plan to install a rear sway bar. With the right amount of pedal pressure, your old Tiger should be able to slide through the comers with a slight over steer.

Autocross Check-Up:

Be sure to check for loose nuts and bolts on leaf springs, traction bars, panhard rod, and sway bars. Check for stress cracks in frame in these areas: where traction bars weld to frame, where lower A-arm bolts to cross member and check cross member itself. Make sure front sway bar brackets are solidly in place. Check all lug nuts to make sure they’re tight. Also check your motor mounts; no one wants their water pumped through their radiator.

Jim Morrison

We have developed new TE/AE Autocross Rules to give our members a clear and concise reference to use in determining what class their cars should participate in and how their cars may be modified to conform to a particular class. We hope that the new rules will reduce confusion and inspire participation in autocrossing. The general approach to the new TE/AE Autocross Rules was to develop them specifically for the variety of Sunbeams owned by members of TE/AE and to differentiate classes by those things that make the most difference in autocross performance. SCCA rules were used as a reference.

Thanks go to the following members who provided SCCA rulebooks, reviewed the drafts and gave us their opinions as we developed these new rules.

We have available both a summary of the classification rules and the full rules document for your review here on the website or you may obtain a hard copy by contacting one of us.

We are inviting your comments so that we can modify the rules to best satisfy the wishes of our members. Please read the complete rules through carefully and if you have concerns or suggestions, provide them to us as soon as possible. We plan to use these rules at the 2005 United autocross.

Autocross is a "grassroots" level motor sport using a mini road course outlined by cones (sometimes called pylons) on a parking lot. Cars compete against the clock – and thus the other competitors. The Club does cheer!

Approved March 19, 2005

1 Introduction

TE/AE encourages participation in the Club’s Autocross events for a fun exhibition of our car’s sporting character. Autocross is a “grassroots” level motor sport using a mini road course outlined by cones (sometimes called pylons) on a parking lot. Cars compete against the clock – and thus the other competitors. The Club does cheer your support since…

Our cars are more fun to DRIVE than to just look at.

Autocross competition is a long-standing tradition within TE/AE.

You can get an adrenaline surge while exploring your car’s performance envelope in a safe & controlled environment.

You can compare your driving skills against your peers in “like” vehicles; or even share the same car.

Show off your car’s acceleration, cornering and braking prowess.

Spectators get to see some burning rubber / power oversteer (by the Tigers) without the cops being bothered, and frequently see the Alpines record even quicker times.

The general philosophy used in the development of these guidelines was to inspire participation of all members and to differentiate classes by those things that make the most difference in autocross performance.

2 General Rules

The general TE/AE approach to Autocross is based on developing rules specifically for the variety of Sunbeams owned by members of TE/AE, using SCCA rules as a reference. If you are not familiar with autocrossing, a visit to the www.autox4u.com web site could be informative and interesting. This example site includes specific “novice” explanations, definitions, and details.

Autocross is a driver (only) sport. Passengers are only permitted for “practice & training” runs – if they are included at a specific event. Final safety approval, rules definitions, allowable noise levels, and any other event decisions are made by the Autocross Event sanctioning organization, if available, with concurrence of the TE/AE Autocross chairperson.

There are always “seasoned” competitors on hand to assist or instruct – just don’t beat them too early in the day.

2.1 Joint event with other clubs (TBD)

2.2 Conducting an Event

The following guidelines are to be used by the TEAE United Autocross committee if an Autocross Event sanctioning organization is not available.

2.2.1 Equipment Required (TBD)

2.2.2 Announcing (TBD)

2.2.3 Course Layout (TBD)

2.2.4 Event Liability

As long as we are insured by J.C. Taylor the following will apply. All club-sponsored events are automatically covered regardless of when or where they take place. Club sponsored events can include racing with the exception of any type of side-by-side racing. There is no automobile liability. The policy is strictly for club liability. Any car that would cause damage to someone or something would be covered under its own car insurance first. Our club policy would cover if we were brought into a claim above and beyond the car owner’s insurance.

2.2.5 Entry Form (TBD)

2.2.6 Flagging

Green This flag displayed at the start of the race. Your race is under way.

Red There is extreme danger. Come to a controlled stop on the side of the
track.

2.2.7 Timing and scoring (TBD)

2.2.8 Post Race Inspection (TBD)

2.2.8.1 Protests (TBD)

2.2.9 Posting Results (TBD)

2.2.10 Event Officials (TBD)

All Rootes Show and Concours D’Elegance

TE/AE invites owners to display their Rootes vehicles in the All Rootes Show for everyone to enjoy and experience. For those who wish to present their cars to the scrutiny of a judging process, we invite you to participate in the Concours d’Elegance.

The All Rootes Show

All Rootes vehicles are special. Therefore we will provide a windscreen placard for the owner to list some characteristics about the car and its usage. Examples include: original owner; miles driven to the United, per year, since new and since the last United; awards won; unique features or uses; years owned. Even though vehicles on the show field are not formally judged, they are eligible to be selected by popular vote as the most desirable Alpine, Tiger or Rare Rootes vehicle at the Sunbeam United or as the Diamond-in-the-Rough by those in attendance. Enjoy and share your experience with others.

The Concours D’Elegance

While it is recognized that the largest quantity of Rootes vehicles preserved are Alpines and Tigers, TE/AE strives for the uniform recognition of ALL Rootes vehicles. Two distinct classes have been established: Stock for those owners whose intent is for their vehicles to represent the appearance and functional characteristics as produced at the factory and personalized for those owners whose intent is to enhance factory appearance and function (performance).

Class Descriptions

Stock

This class recognizes those vehicles that are intended to represent an “as manufactured” condition. Vehicles in this class were produced by Rootes manufacturing or an authorized coachwork company for sale to the retail public for use on public roads. Excludes Rootes race prepared and promotional vehicles.

Personalized

Vehicles in this class incorporate modern quality and engineering enhancements to the original appearance and functional items. Changes are typically considered as upgrades to factory offered appearance and functional items. Includes non-factory prepared race prepared vehicles.

Vehicle Categories

Stock Alpine -1959 through 1968 roadsters

Stock Tiger -1964 through 1967 roadsters

Personalized Alpine – 1959 through 1968 roadsters

Personalized Tiger – 1964 through 1967 roadsters

Rare Rootes, Stock -For all Rootes vehicles other than 1959 through 1968 Alpine and Tigers. Includes Sedans, Roadsters, Estate wagons, Utility, Caravans, etc., Rootes authorized or factory prepared race and promotional vehicles and custom coachwork vehicles.

Premiere Rootes – For vehicles that have won first place in their class in any national Sunbeam Marque club event during the previous thirty-six months. This category is intended to set a higher standard for concours presentation and as such will be a Judges vote based on a comparison of vehicles present with consideration given to the class and category the vehicle represents.

Guidelines for Determining Classification

To help you determine if your vehicle should be considered Stock or Personalized, identify modifications below that have been incorporated. These are guidelines. Not rules. It is in your best interest to place the vehicle in the class where it will be compared to other vehicles for similar characteristics. Please contact the Concours d’Elegance chairperson if you are uncertain.

Showing Instructions

Questions on classifications must be settled prior to judging. Consult the Concours d’Elegance Chairperson if assistance is desired in determining classification. Contact information on registration form.

Your car will be judged as presented on the field and you should be present to open the doors, hood and trunk and to start your engine when asked or provide permission before judging starts for your car to be judged unattended.

Ashtrays and glove box should be empty and clean. Console may contain functional items such as registration, sunglasses, etc. The car’s (hard or soft) top must be on/up to receive full judging credit.

Any car found to be misclassified by its owner(s) will be significantly downgraded in the evaluation. Classification decisions of the Chairman of the Concours d’Elegance are final.

Judging Criteria

The major categories in which the each car will be judged are listed below. The points associated with each category and specific judging criteria vary by the judging class and are listed on the associated Judging Criteria Sheets.

Exterior

Chassis

Engine Compartment

Interior

Trunk

Function Test

Teams of judges will do the judging, each team scoring one or more particular classifications (exterior, chassis, etc.). In addition to the judges, advisors will be appointed to provide classification/expertise as necessary. Resource information available from acceptable recognized Marque experts will be used to train judges and settle conflicts. The Concours Chairman will resolve conflicts. An appeal may be submitted in writing to the TE/AE Board of Directors.

Stock Classes

Stock appearance should represent the original patina of the car as manufactured. The desired finish and texture of the paint, chrome, interior, engine compartment, trunk, chassis and other elements shall be as originally manufactured. This includes paint with some “orange peel”, grinding and polishing marks under chrome plating, original wiring harnesses and terminals, etc. High luster show quality paint and chrome is a deviation from stock appearance. Attempts to replace original equipment as closely as possible, such as upholstery and paint colors are acceptable and encouraged. Modifications and miscellaneous additions will tend to reduce total points in this class. Replacement service items will not be considered as modifications. For example, spark plugs and wires, distributor cap, coolant hoses and clamps, filters, bolts, etc. However, when scores are close or tied, vehicles with the most features (hardware, trim, etc.) accurately replicating factory conditions will achieve the higher score. These stock criteria are aimed at recognizing those cars/owners who strive for a true stock condition.

Personalized Classes

Personalized appearance represents visual and mechanical engineering changes to original interior, exterior, trunk, electrics, etc. that improve overall appearance and/or performance but retain the original design appearance and functional upgrades of existing factory features. Non-standard paint, top and interior colors are acceptable. Included in this class are vehicles with radical, non-typical, changes that depart from original visual and mechanical design. Examples include sheet metal alterations, different engine types (V-6, rotary, Toyota, non-small block V8, Alpines with a V-8), engine blowers, turbo chargers, fuel Injection, etc.), replacement or enhancement of the Sunbeam suspension with another type, non-stock engine position, non-stock drive-line, frame or body alterations for racing, elimination or replacement of a combination of original interior/exterior items with non-Sunbeam related items (different seats, dash, bumpers, gauges, fuel cells, roll cages).

Rare Rootes

Rare Rootes judging will be based on a comparison of vehicles present in class (Stock or Personalized) with consideration given to the class the vehicle represents. Vehicles campaigned solely in national or international sanctioned race organization events are candidates for this class. Vehicle results are compared to those in the Rare Rootes class to determine the class winner.

Premiere Rootes

Premiere Rootes judging will be by a Judge’s vote. Judges will base their assessments on a comparison of vehicles present in class (Stock or Personalized) with consideration given to the class the vehicle represents.

Award Presentations

Awards will be presented in the following vehicle categories:

Judged Concours d’Elegance (trophies awarded)

Stock Alpine (1st, 2nd, 3rd)

Stock Tiger (1st, 2nd, 3rd)

Most Desirable Rare Rootes Vehicle (Chosen from all Rare Rootes Class vehicles)

Diamond-in-the-Rough (Any Rootes vehicle)

The Most Desirable ROOTES vehicle (Any Rootes vehicle)

Popular Vote Guidelines

Most Desirable
Your choice of the vehicle in each category that you would like to own.

Most Desirable ROOTES
Your choice of each of the vehicle from all categories, that in your opinion, best represents the marque in appearance and condition.

Diamond-in-the-Rough
This class rewards the one car that is the most esthetically challenged vehicle which the owner has demonstratively and enthusiastically shown to be their “Personal Pride” by overcoming obstacles of sneering, jeering, and lack of apparent vehicle mechanical integrity and comfort. It is un-restored or unfinished, it is rough, it may even be ugly, but it has that operational and visual patina and quality that sets it apart from the others.

Long Distance Award
This award is given to the Rootes vehicle that was driven longest distance to the United. The winner will be determined by the mileage noted on the windscreen placard of the vehicles in the Rootes Show or the Concours d’Elegance.

Autocross Guidelines and Rules

TE/AE encourages participation in the Club’s Autocross events for a fun exhibition of our car’s sporting character. Autocross is a “grassroots” level motor sport using a mini road course outlined by cones (sometimes called pylons) on a parking lot. One car at a time competes against the clock – and thus the other competitors. The Club does cheer your support since.

Our cars are more fun to DRIVE than to just look at.

Autocross competition is a long-standing tradition within TE/AE.

You can get an adrenaline surge while exploring your car’s performance envelope in a safe & controlled environment.

You can compare your driving skills against your peers in “like” vehicles; or even share the same car (multiple drivers O.K. since only one car on the course at a time).

Show off your car’s acceleration, cornering and braking prowess.

Spectators get to see some burning rubber / power oversteer (by the Tigers) without the cops being bothered, and frequently see the Alpines record even quicker times.

The general philosophy used in the development of these guidelines was to keep it simple and to differentiate classes by those things that make the most difference in autocross performance. These were determined to be tires (compound and width), posi-traction and engine, in that order. We do not differentiate a car’s autocross class by upgrades in suspension, transmission type, rearend ratios, wheel diameter, etc.

General Rules
The general TE/AE approach to Autocross is based on the SCCA’s Solo 2 rules.

Final safety approval, rules definitions, and any / all other event decisions are by the Autocross Event sanctioning organization with concurrence of the TE/AE Autocross chairperson.

There are always “seasoned” competitors on hand to assist or instruct – just don’t beat them too early in the day.

Requirements
The first rule of Autocross is to BE SAFE. A little common sense goes a long way, and the following will help achieve the SAFE and fun event that everyone wants.

Helmets must be worn by all competitors. Helmets must have a Snell 90 or newer label attached. D.O.T. approved helmets will not be accepted. Loaner helmets are normally available if you don’t have your own.

Seat belts are required.

Safety (“Tech”) Inspection. Your car must pass a brief event safety inspection. At a minimum, the checks will include: properly functioning brakes, steering, secure battery, throttle return spring, removal of all loose items, no trim rings or nave plates, no major fluid leaks, tight suspension and wheel bearings.

Tire pressure – check with the tech inspector or a veteran driver about proper inflation pressures for Autocross.

Class Definitions
There are two classes for Tigers and two classes for Alpines: Stock and Street Prepared. There is one Modified class for Alpines and Tigers, combined. Other classes may be added for other Rootes vehicles. Classification will be as follows:

Stock – To be considered Stock, a car must meet ALL of the Stock criteria.

Engine – Must be a small block Ford engine for Tigers of no more than 302 cubic inches. Alpines must have a Rootes engine of no more than 1725cc.

Differential – Must have an open differential.

Tires – Must have regular street tires.

Wheels – Must have wheels no wider than 5.5″ for Tiger and Alpine roadsters, others according to original equipment.

Street Prepared – A car will be considered Street Prepared if it has ANY of the following attributes:

Engine – Any non-stock Ford small block engine (see Stock description above) for Tigers. For Alpines, any non-stock (see Stock description above) Rootes engine.

Differential – Any limited slip / posi-traction differential.

Tires – Any tires other than regular street tires.

Wheels – A wheel width of greater than 5.5″ and no wider than 7″ for Tiger and Alpine roadsters, others according to original equipment.

Modified – A car will be considered Modified if it has ANY of the following attributes:

Engine – Any non-Ford small block engine for Tigers. For Alpines, any non-Rootes engine.

Tires – D.O.T. approved “Competition” tires or race tires.

Wheels – A wheel width of greater than 7″.

Licensed – Car is not street legal and/or is purpose built for racing/autocross.

Safety – In addition to the basic safety rules above, Modified cars are encouraged to have a roll bar.

Classification issues will be decided by the TE/AE Autocross Chairman for the specific event.
