30th Annual Crab Feast

It’s Crab Feast time again! The Chesapeake Region’s annual gathering this year marks the 30th  anniversary of combining Sunbeams and those icons of the bay, steamed crabs, for an afternoon of fun, sun and camaraderie.

Again this year, the Feast will be held at the Calvert family farm. The property overlooks Bodkin Creek, which flows into the Chesapeake Bay at its junction with the Patapsco River.   Download the directions and the registration form.

There’s lots of space for cars, people and pets. The event is on – rain or shine. The new harvest rules for Chesapeake Bay crabs seem to be working.  We are seeing large numbers of juvenile crabs.  Prospects for a good supply of crabs are excellent.  However, please provide an email address, just in case.

In addition to the steamed crabs, we’ll have catered pit beef, ham and turkey, beer and sodas.  Please plan to bring a side dish or dessert to complement the meal.  Additional lawn chairs are welcome.

Because of the cost involved in planning an event of this size, please make definite reservations by sending in the coupon on the form  with a check by August 28, 2010.  Thanks for your prompt reply. (All instructions are on the form)

Rick Lara and John Logan are planning a Michigan Equinox Cruise for Tigers East /Alpines East members and their friends on September 19th, 2010.

It will start with a tour of an automotive and railroad museum in Dearborn Heights, then travel through Dearborn to Northville on Hines Drive, then around the south shore of Whitmore Lake to Dexter and then to Cleary’s Pub in Chelsea for lunch.

The total tour, cruise and lunch will take about 5 hours and we will travel about 58 miles. You may drive any vehicle you like.

Our Sunbeams will be part of the display for the huge crowds that come to the Rough and Tumble Engineers Historical Association live “Spring Steam Up”.

Of course you should bash the BASH with a live Sunbeam too and without steaming, please.

Recommended arrival time is 8 to 10AM. Later OK.
All Sunbeams will be parked as a group and Beamers in non-Beams will be allowed to park nearby.

Ted Casey’s your host at this entertaining educational and large operating exhibit of live steam equipment of yesteryear. Everything is operating from huge prairie steam traction engines, earth moving equipment, farm equipment, stationary power equipment and a Shay train that provides rides.

Local Dutch country food is available along with excursions to local Amish shopping centers like Paradise,  Intercourse and Bird-In-Hand and factory outlets of Lancaster. There is something for everyone.

Tigers East / Alpines East will hold our Rootes United XXIX,  over Columbus Day weekend in Rockland, Maine.

Festivities begin Thursday, October 7 and end on Monday, October 11. This time we are especially encouraging all cars of the Rootes Group to participate.
Together with the Owls Head Transpiration Museum (OHTM) Foreign Auto Festival & Antique Aeroplane Show, this will be an exciting event.

Accommodations are at the four-star Samoset resort in Rockland on the shore of Penobscot Bay, at the rate of $119 per night Thursday through Sunday.

This is prime “leaf peeping” season and Columbus Day Weekend! Make your reservations EARLY!

Activities

Planned events include a rally and dinner cruise on Friday evening.

An autocross, held in conjunction with the Mid Maine Sports Car Club, at the Owl’s Head Museum display area and a lobster bake are Saturday’s activities.

Rootes vehicles will be featured marquee in the first few rows at the Owl’s Head Foreign Auto Festival on Sunday.  Our 100-point concourse will occur at that time.

The Festival hosts some 200 plus foreign autos along with an antique aero show, free Model T rides, high-wheel bicycle demonstrations, bi-plane rides and a free admission to their Museum if you arrive in a foreign auto.  The event concludes with a Sunday evening banquet at Samoset for Rootes participants.

Bring A Sunbeam Here

Saturday May 8th is Steam Up day at Rough & Tumble: a living experience where equipment in use when America was a burgeoning industrial and agricultural empire is fired up and running again for a large public following. Everything from tiny to HUGE stationary engines, traction engines, Ag and earth moving equipment, a Shay engine with passenger train rides, and more. There is an early 20th century life style exhibit, a AutoHaus and a variety of other displays.

And of course, our Beams will be on display in the Sunbeam Corral. After all, this is an educational experience. We might as well educate the public about our hobby, too.

• The gate opens at 8 a.m.
• Entry to R&T is $5/person.
• You must present a copy of Rootes Review to the gate keeper to park in the Sunbeam Corral. (Applies to Beams and your private vehicles.) Otherwise you will be banished to parking outside with the other public door bangers. Can’t find your copy? Members go here and print one out! (Read back issues there, too!  You’ll need to log into the members area to do that.)
• A dollar or two donation will be solicited to defray BASH expenses upon your arrival in the Corral.

Lunch is on your own at the Food Court. Local Lancaster County Dutch Country food is offered. We’ll do our best to harness ourselves as a group and eat together at Noon.

Ted Casey will give us a personal tour of the historical association facilities. He will also arrange transportation to local Lancaster County shops and factory outlets for those who aren’t entertained with history and steam.

For those who prefer to arrive Friday and socialize, an evening with a scrumptious all-you-can-eat Rainbow Dinner theater experience is in store for you. Playing is a comedy, “How The Other Half Loves.”

The Owls Head Transportation Museum (OHTM) will be first the site of the autocross. The next day the concourse will also be held there concurrent with their annual Foreign car festival and antique Aeroplane show.  Cars of the ROOTES Group will be the favored ones.

The museum is home to an operating collection of antique aircraft, significant aircraft include a 1923 Fokker C.IV, a 1916 Sopwith Pup, a 1917 Curtiss Jenny and a Standard J-1.

Antique automobiles, bicycles, carriages and motorcycles are shown in a very spacious way with excellent explanations. Besides the collection, the museum hosts a variety of special attractions like model T Ford rides, biplane flights, demonstrations, and children’s activities like model building, pedal cars, and more.

The museum will offer TEAE members a couple of biplane rides and possibly a fly-over the Samoset and the area. Details, how we will award these will follow later! Keep your eyes peeled.

Rockport – Rockland – Owls Head
October 8 – 11, 2010

The United meeting of Tigers East/Alpines East be held in the midcoast region of Maine on Columbus Day weekend (Oct. 8 – 11) in 2010.

Location:

The events and other activities will be held at the Samoset Resort in Rockport  (www.samosetresort.com), at the Owls Head Transportation Museum in Owls Head (www.ohtm.org) and in the surrounding area.

OHTM will be holding their annual Foreign Auto Festival & Antique Aeroplane Show on Sunday, October 10, 2010. The museum is very interested in having TE/AE as the featured Club at the event.

The Samoset is a four-star resort situated on the shore of Penobscot Bay and offers many amenities and activities for its guests. The Owls Head Transportation Museum houses a large collection of antique and classic cars and airplanes and has facilities to host many activities. OHTM and The Samoset are located about 15 minutes apart.

Costs:

We have a commitment from the Samoset to offer rooms at the rate of $119 per night. This is quite reasonable, since the usual, in-season, rate is $259. This includes the use of all the facilities the Samoset offers.

We anticipate that the autocross will be held at OHTM in their parking lot.

We plan to offer a dinner cruise in the waters around Rockland Harbor, probably on Friday night and a lobster bake on Saturday, perhaps at the autocross location. These will be voluntary activities for which we have not gathered prices/costs.

Other Notes:

As noted above, OHTM will be holding their annual Foreign Car Show and Antique Airplane Exhibition on Sunday, October 10 at which TE/AE will be the featured club. The museum is interested in having our concours along with their show and will arrange space for the task.

Since OHTM will have their show on Sunday, it will necessitate TE/AE having the autocross on Saturday, on the paved area at OHTM adjacent to the museum. It will also be possible to have a Lobster Bake/Picnic at the same location, afterwards, for those interested in the real flavor of Maine. While the autocross is taking place, we propose to have a local tour/rallye to take in some of the sights of the area, such as the changing fall colors and the lighthouse at Marshall Point (www.marshallpoint.org)

Other points of interest:

There are many interesting things to see and do in the area and we will endeavor to arrange visits to some points of interest such as the Farnsworth Art Museum(www.farnsworthmuseum.org) and the Maine Lighthouse Museum (www.mainelighthousemuseum.com) as well as other spots in and around Rockland in addition to the activities already mentioned.
